SLED TVs, SLED technology

Let’s begin with the fact that the Realme company was created by BBK Electronics (also owns Oppo, Vivo OnePlus brands) for the Indian market, it was also decided to supply electronics of Realme brand to other developing countries. Realme itself is not engaged in the development of screens for TVs, and most likely also does not develop TVs. In today’s conditions it is much more profitable to order the TV production from a large OEM, ODM manufacturer.

SLED technology explanation

SLED technology – there is no such technology, it’s just a fictional marketing move of Chinese manufacturers for Indian buyers. BBK mainly supplies its products to developing countries, cheap products are competitive in such markets, the Oppo brand is promoted in developed countries, but without much success.

As explained by Realme, the created TV has a revolutionary technology to backlight three LEDs, blue, red, green, they create a white color that has a low component of blue. So, the SLED TV is the same as the LED TV, the only difference is the color of the LEDs.

Advantages and disadvantages of SLED

Advantages are very controversial, or they are practically non-existent, let’s consider the declared advantages:

NTSC 108% – the color space that can be shown on a TV covers 108% of the color shades of the NTCS standard, but this standard was invented back in 1953. Yes, he stipulated a fairly large coverage of the color space, but in some ways it is conditional, without special devices it is difficult to check. But we can say that if the TV has a color space coverage of about 100% NTSC, it must maintain color depth of 10 bits, the real 10 bits, without flickering backlight. Such screens are expensive and are QLED or OLED technology. And what we see in the specifications of SLED TV from Realme (this model RMV2002) screen 8bit + FRC. Support for a wide range of colors is very questionable. And the price of the TV is very small for a device with a quality screen.

TÜV Rheinland certification is a pretty well-known commercial organization that earns money by performing quality control of products, the manufacturer can then indicate on the label that the product is TUV certified. Realme has checked a single product sample and only one parameter and has received a Low Blue Light Content certificate, available at https://www.certipedia.com/certificates/50477870?locale=en.

But Realme has tested the SLED TV according to the outdated standard (the test standards are developed by the TUV itself) 2 PfG 2383 / 06.2016, although at the time of obtaining the certificate already existed a new standard test 2 PfG 2383 / 03.2020. The full name of the 2 PfG 2383 standard is “Low blue light assessment for displays, our initial requirements”. And what this standard only says about the fact that the blue shade in the emitted spectrum is not more than 20%. We can’t talk about any comfortable viewing, alas, TV hasn’t been tested on many other parameters, such as the appearance of negative symptoms, eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, back, shoulder or neck pain. So, what is this, again, advertising.

Shortcomings until we know about them, and most likely we will not know, because the TV is planned to sell only in India. There is no information that SLED TVs will be sold in other countries, SLED can’t be patented as a technology, it’s just another type of backlighting creation. The logical question is why Realme will only produce one TV with such a screen, if the technology is so revolutionary, then such TVs will be in demand, they need to be made a lot and sold around the world, and in a couple of months, you can become a leader in the TV production industry. And the answer is simple, SLED has no advantages over other similar televisions.

Most likely, we are faced with a launch on the Internet, not quite a truthful information company. In a very simple scenario. The company throws in a couple of Internet sites, press release. This news is repeated by dozens of other publications, so we got the news about the creation of a new technology that does not exist. The press release itself contains true information, parameters and description of the technology, but it is impossible to check it all, it requires in-depth research.

Where and who manufactures SLED TV sets

The televisions are manufactured in India at the factory of Videotex international PVT ltd, which assembles various products, mainly for India under outsourcing scheme.
