The Hulu Watch Party feature lets you watch movies and TV shows with friends remotely through synchronized video and audio. You can be in different locations and watch the same movie or TV show at the same time—just like watching a TV channel where everyone is watching the same program. However, the service has quite a few limitations, so you won’t always see the Watch Party button when you open the link for shared viewing, and here’s why.
Watch Party Restrictions
Hulu Watch Party is only available in a web browser on devices running macOS 10.13 or later, Windows 10 or Windows 11, and ChromeOS. The feature is designed for computers only, so it isn’t available on smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, or streaming devices.
Your browser must support HTML5 with JavaScript and cookies enabled. Fortunately, these features are turned on by default in virtually all modern browsers, so no additional configuration is usually required.
Another limitation involves HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). If you’re using an external monitor that doesn’t support HDCP, Hulu may display a black screen instead of playing the video. This is part of the service’s copy protection system, which prevents protected content from being recorded or copied.
Video quality may also vary depending on your setup. When you’re watching directly on a laptop or desktop display, Hulu Watch Party supports streaming in up to 720p (HD). However, if you connect an external monitor, the stream may be limited to 480p, particularly if the connected display doesn’t fully meet HDCP requirements. This lower resolution helps maintain compatibility with content protection requirements.
You should also keep in mind the general rules: to create or join a “Watch Party” on Hulu, each participant must have a valid Hulu subscription and be at least 18 years old. To join a “Watch Party,” invited participants must use the unique invitation link provided by the host. Please note that the “Watch Party” feature is available only for select movies and TV shows from the Hulu library, which can be identified by the “Watch Party” icon. No more than 8 participants can watch the video at the same time.
How to Use Hulu Watch Party
Starting a Hulu Watch Party is simple, provided the movie or TV show supports the feature.
- Open Hulu.com in a supported web browser and sign in to your account.
- Go to the details page of the movie or TV show you want to watch. If the title supports Watch Party, you’ll see the Watch Party icon on the page.
- Click the Watch Party icon. For TV series, you can also start a Watch Party from the episode’s More (three-dot) menu.
- Select Start the Party.
- Click the link icon to copy the invitation URL, then send it to the people you want to invite.
To join a Hulu Watch Party, simply open the invitation link sent by the host. If you’re using the same Hulu subscription as the organizer, you must be in the same household. Otherwise, Hulu may ask you to confirm that you’re watching from outside the home. Remember that all participants must be 18 years or older to use Watch Party.
