Even devices without full-fledged operating systems can be updated. For example, Samsung soundbars offer two update methods: manual and automatic. Automatic updates occur over Wi-Fi, meaning your soundbar must support this type of connection. Otherwise, firmware updates can only be installed manually via USB.
How Automatic Soundbar Updates via Wi-Fi Work
If the soundbar supports automatic updates, the process is managed by the SmartThings device management program. The app automatically scans Samsung servers for updates for devices connected to the smart home system. If an update is found, SmartThings instructs the soundbar to download and install it. The update can be downloaded even when the soundbar is turned off and installed either in sleep mode or when the device is powered on.
Disabling Automatic Update Downloads
There are two ways to prevent automatic updates from being installed. The first is to disable Wi-Fi on the soundbar, effectively making it a standalone device outside the smart home ecosystem. The second option is to disable automatic updates directly through the SmartThings app, preventing all smart home devices from updating automatically.
Each method has its advantages. Disabling Wi-Fi allows other devices to continue receiving updates, which is a plus. Meanwhile, using SmartThings to disable updates lets you keep track of all smart home devices while still having the option to manually initiate updates when needed.
To disable automatic updates, follow these steps:
- Open the SmartThings app on your phone.
- Tap Menu in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Settings in the top-right corner.
- Scroll down to the bottom and find Automatic update of devices and services.
- Open this menu and set it to Off.

Once disabled, none of your smart home devices will install updates automatically. This can be a good solution, as it prevents potential software errors from being installed without your knowledge, saving you time and effort in restoring the soundbar’s functionality if issues arise.
