Modern TVs have evolved into complex devices, far removed from the days when they were controlled by simple chips that performed essential functions. A TV is a computer with a processor, memory, and operating system. These smart TVs allow you to install apps to access streaming services, connect to the Internet, and more. However, like any other advanced technology, they may occasionally freeze, run slowly, or experience other performance issues. In such cases, a reboot may be necessary.

Reboot For All Sony Android and Google TVs

There are two main ways to reboot your Sony Smart TV, and I’ll detail each of them below.

Soft Reboot: For all Sony TVs with Android and Google operating systems
Sony Smart TVs run Android, and the newer models feature the Google TV interface. Both of these operating systems support the standard Android reboot procedure. To perform a soft reboot, follow the steps below:

  • Press and hold the power button on the remote control for about 5 seconds.
  • The message “Reboot” will appear on the screen. Select this option.
  • On older models of Sony TVs, the TV will turn off and automatically reboot after about a minute.

Hard Reboot: Powering off the TV is similar to a soft reboot, but it is called a hard reboot because you unplug the TV.

  • Unplug the TV from the wall outlet.
  • Wait a few minutes.
  • Plug the TV back in and turn it on.

These methods clean up its RAM by deleting temporary files. The OS will start over but will not use the temporary files when booting up since they are missing.

Factory reset: Not a reboot, but a complete reset

It’s worth mentioning that there is another option called a factory reset. It also involves rebooting the TV but completely erases all data, including apps and settings, returning the TV to its original factory state. A factory reset is recommended only as a last resort, as it erases all user settings and downloaded applications, which you will then have to reinstall and re-authorize.
