In 2018-2019, TV manufacturers sought to maximize the advantages of their products. During this period, it was decided to advertise the so-called “intelligent processors,” which were supposedly supposed to provide an unusual image quality. This is how Object Depth Enhancer technology was born, which is, in fact, a marketing move. LG registered the trademark and began to promote it in advertising campaigns for its TV sets actively.

Object Depth Enhancer: a picture enhancement technology in LG televisions that is supposed to increase the volume of the image.

How Object Depth Enhancer Works

The principle of Object Depth Enhancer technology is to enhance the depth of objects on the screen. It is known that to create the effect of depth, it is necessary to strengthen the transitions between different color shades, which allows you to visually highlight objects.

To illustrate, imagine two texts of the same color. If you add shadows to one of them, it will look more voluminous. This is approximately how this technology should work: the TV program analyzes the shades of colors. It corrects the image, creating more precise and smoother transitions that enhance the sense of depth.

Disadvantages of the technology: Unfortunately, despite its promises, Object Depth Enhancer did not improve the image much. For one thing, it didn’t always process the image correctly.

Secondly, when watching high-quality video, the technology does not show a noticeable improvement in the picture. In recent years, with the development of technologies such as HDR, image enhancements are becoming less and less in demand, as the original quality of content plays a much more significant role.

Object Depth Enhancer, no marketing

In practice, TVs do not have enough computing resources to process and analyze the image at this level properly. After all, you need to correctly analyze and process the image because not all objects on the screen need to create depth; the program must understand whether the object is in the foreground or the background. Also, it should be taken into account that if you use a TV as a monitor, such technologies should be turned off as they introduce a delay in the signal and increase Input lag.

That’s why, since 2020, references to Object Depth Enhancer have practically disappeared, although the trademark remains with LG. It is possible that in the future we will hear about its return again, in the advertising campaigns of new TVs.
