How big is a 55-inch TV? This is the information you are most interested in when choosing a TV. You need to know the size of the TV to solve several problems at once.

  • Will it be comfortable to watch a 55-inch TV?
  • Will it fit where you want to put it?
  • And, of course, the eternal question of whether I’m making the right choice, whether I should buy a smaller or larger TV.
  • And there’s another question that many people forget to ask – what kind of TV stand should you have? If you plan to put the TV on a stand, you need to know the distance between the legs of the TV, and it is best to buy a TV with a center stand.

The first thing you need to consider is how the TV is measured. You should know that both TVs and monitors are measured in inches diagonally. Some people mistakenly believe that the size specified by the manufacturer is the width of the TV, but this is not the case. A 55-inch TV is the size of the screen diagonal. And there is another nuance, not essential, but there is one. The stated size of the TV on the diagonal is rounded to the nearest integer. For example, if the TV screen is 55.4 inches, then the size will be specified as 55 inches, and similarly, 54.5 will also be specified as 55 inches.

Width, height and thickness of a 55-inch TV

55″ TV dimensions

There are two measurement systems, American and metric, so I will give the dimensions of both systems.
You should also know that TVs are now manufactured with an aspect ratio of 16×9, which means that if you divide the sides of the TV into equal parts, there will be 16 parts in width and nine parts in vertical. This standard has been adopted in both the creation of modern video and the production of TV displays.

In the metric system of measurement, the diagonal of a 55-inch TV is 139.7 centimeters.

This is easily converted from one measurement system to another: one inch equals 2.54 cm or 254 mm. Therefore, the formula for converting 55 inches looks like 55×2.54=139.7 cm.

Now, let’s consider the width and height of a 55-inch TV.
Suppose that from the dimensions of the diagonal of the TV, you consider only the width and height of the display. In this case, it needs to be adjusted because the screen needs to be held vertically, so TVs have a frame around the screen that holds the display. In some TVs, it’s larger, in others smaller; for example, in OLEDs, it’s minimal because the OLED display is glued on. The dimensions of OLED, QLED, and LED TVs will be discussed below.

The width of a 55-inch diagonal TV

If you need to determine the dimensions of your TV, you can use geometric formulas. However, in this case, I will give you the necessary information about the width and height of a 55-inch TV.

The width of a 55-inch TV is 48 inches or 122 centimeters if you only consider the screen. If you consider the frame around the screen, the width is about 48.1-48.6 inches or 122.1-123.4 cm, depending on the type of TV.

Height of a 55-inch TV

The height of a 55-inch TV can be measured in two ways: with and without a stand. If the TV has legs, this usually applies to small TVs with a diagonal of up to 55 inches. If the TV is more extensive, it is usually mounted on a stand in the middle of the TV. However, if the TV is mounted on the wall, the size of the stand can be disregarded.

It is important to note that there is always a large frame at the bottom of the TV, which usually houses the control buttons, joystick, and speakers. The size of the TV stand can vary from model to model so you can find the exact dimensions from the specifications.

  • Without the frame, the height of a 55-inch TV will be 27 inches or 68.5 centimeters.
  • With the frame, the height will be around 27.7-28.5 inches or 70-71 centimeters.
  • Finally, if the TV has a stand, the height will be 29-31 inches or 73-78 centimeters.

The thickness of a 55″ TV

Although modern technology, particularly OLED, has made it possible to produce ultra-thin screens, gluing them to the wall has not been possible. It is possible, but the problem is removing them without breaking them. That’s why all TV displays are mounted in a rigid case. The case also houses the power unit and the main board, which has various ports (HDMI, antenna input, USB). Holes are made into the body of the TV so that it can be mounted on the wall. Of course, manufacturers are trying to reduce the thickness of TVs, so Samsung has models with an external unit (One Connect). This external unit houses the power supply, main board, and ports. One Connect is connected to the display with a single cable, but there is still a problem: you need somewhere to place this unit.
The thickness of the TV depends on the type of display; LED and QLED are the thickest panels, so naturally, the TV will be thicker. OLED TVs are thinner.

The thickness of LED TVs: The thickness of LED TVs depends on the matrix of the screen. It also depends on the generation of the factory where the displays are made. There are factories built 15-20 years ago and newer factories. The technology has improved, and newer factories produce thinner screens. On the other hand, it is almost impossible to change the manufacturing technology, so if displays made in old factories are bought for the TV, the TV will be thicker.
The thickness of QLED TVs: Despite the advertising, QLEDs are the same as LEDs but use newer materials. Both old and new factories produce QLED displays.
The thickness of OLED TVs: OLED displays are skinny; in these TVs, the thickness is determined by the need to accommodate the mount and the ports to connect the TV.

The thickness of LED and QLED TVs is 1.6 to 3.2 inches or 4-8 cm.
OLED TVs are 1 to 2 inches or 2.5 to 5 cm thick.

Below is an example of a side view of LED, QLED, and OLED TVs.

Visually, you can see that the thickest TV is VIZIO, and this is true; I made a little comparison, and you can also see the table with the actual size of the TVs.

55 inch TV dimensions to feet

Some may be more accustomed to measuring in feet; below are the dimensions of a 55-inch TV in feet.

  • A 55-inch diagonal is 4.58 feet.
  • The length (width) of a 55-inch is 4 feet.
  • The height (Tall) of the 55-inch TV is 2.33 feet.
  • The thickness (depth) of the 55-inch TV is 0.1-0.2 feet.

Actual sizes of 55-inch TVs

While working on this article, I compared different sizes of televisions. After gathering the necessary information, I decided to present the results of my research in the form of tables. You can see two tables; the first shows the TV sizes in inches and the second in centimeters.
You will find this valuable information as it will allow you to compare the sizes of TVs from different manufacturers.

Dimensions of the 55-inch TV in the carton

Your TV is carefully packaged for shipment to protect it from possible damage. The dimensions of the carton may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer, but on average, the carton dimensions for shipping a 55-inch TV are as follows: 55″ x 33″ x 6″ or in cm 140 x 83 x 15

Height – 33 inches, 83 centimeters
Length – 55 inches, 140 centimeters
Width – 6 inches, 15 centimeters.

A little information about transportation: Will the 55-inch TV fit in your car? If you have a small sedan, probably not; you won’t be able to fit it in the passenger compartment or trunk. However, if you have a reasonably large crossover with a large trunk and folding seats, it will likely fit in the car.
