When choosing a new TV for your room, it’s easy to get caught between two extremes. On the one hand, a large screen creates a more immersive experience, but it can also visually overwhelm the space. On the other hand, a smaller TV might seem like the better choice, but it may not provide the level of comfort and detail you expect.
Manufacturers typically list screen size in inches, measured diagonally. However, this number alone doesn’t give the full picture. To understand how a TV will actually look in your room, it’s important to consider its actual dimensions—the width and height of the screen.
How to choose the optimal viewing distance for your TV
The most comfortable viewing experience is achieved when the screen occupies approximately 30–40% of your horizontal field of view.
To better understand this in practice, try a simple experiment. Stand in front of a door and take one step back. At this distance, the door will occupy about 40% of your field of view. It may seem quite close—and it is—but this is precisely the distance that will give you the most immersive experience when watching TV. Of course, you can always sit farther away if that’s more comfortable for you. But then it becomes quite difficult to determine which TV size is right for you.
The easiest way to choose the right TV size is to base your decision on the size of your room. Of course, your options may vary depending on the room’s layout—whether it’s square or rectangular.
Here is a table with recommended TV sizes based on room size.
| room size in square feet | room size in square meters | recommended TV size |
| 50 | 6 | 32″ |
| 100 | 9 | 40-43″ |
| 130 | 12 | 40-43″ |
| 150 | 14 | 50″ |
| 170 | 16 | 55″ |
| 200 | 19 | 60″ |
| 250 | 23 | 65″ |
| 300 | 28 | 70-75″ |
| 350 | 33 | 85-87″ |
| 400 | 37 | 88″ |
| 450 and more | 42 and more | 98-100″ |
For small rooms, TVs with a screen diagonal of 32–43 inches are best suited.
For medium-sized rooms, a TV with a screen diagonal of 50–75 inches is usually the optimal choice.
For large rooms, it makes sense to choose a screen larger than 75 inches to achieve a truly immersive experience.
Viewing distance for gaming and content quality
When using a TV for gaming, the viewing distance is similar to that used for watching movies. A closer viewing distance helps you see more detail and focus on the gameplay, but you should choose your exact position based on comfort.
Image quality directly affects the optimal viewing distance. High-quality content in 4K or Full HD looks sharp at standard viewing distances. However, older videos or low-resolution videos have a low pixel density, which makes the image look blurry and reveals imperfections when viewed up close. A 4K TV cannot fully restore such content; it merely scales it up. Although older movies are now upscaled to high quality, so this issue is relatively minor.
