If you want to compare all the specifications of Samsung Neo QLED series TVs at the end of the article there is a table with QN90A and QN85A tech specs.
Samsung QN90A vs QN85A differences
If we compare these two models of Samsung Neo QLED TVs, there are still differences. First and foremost they are in the screen technology. Samsung QN85A with screen sizes of 55, 65, 75 inches has a screen made by IPS technology. To be more precise, it’s the IPS ADS screen type. The 86-inch TV has a screen made using VA technology.
The technology of the screen will provoke significant differences. The thing is that IPS matrices, despite all the advantages, have a much worse black color. That is, it does not look like deep black, but more with a gray tint, which significantly affects the quality of the picture, especially if you like to watch noir movies.
The picture above shows the difference when local dimming is turned off. However, if you have local dimming on, you won’t see much difference.
What is better to buy QN90A or QN85A?
On the other hand, the Samsung QN90A has a VA display type. In these screens, the backlight of the screen is supplemented by small LEDs, which are collected into zones, which allows you to control the backlight. There are 792 such zones in total.
What can be noted, if you like watching TV in the dark, then you are definitely better to buy a TV with VA display (Samsung QN85A 86 inch or QN90A). If you plan to watch TV in the light, then QN85A will also be a good choice.
Who makes IPS ADS displays?
IPS ADS displays were Chinese company BOE. However, we have no information on which company makes the screens for the QN85A and QN90A. If BOE has not licensed its IPS ADS technology to third-party manufacturers, then these are screens made by BOE. Also, in case you didn’t know, BOE is one of the leaders in display manufacturing, so their displays are of very high quality.
Other differences between QN90A vs QN85A
The only difference, apart from the type of display, is the number of speakers. Samsung QN90A has 8 of them, QN85A has 6. However, the total sound power is the same, so you can ignore this. Also, both TVs have Q Symphony technology, so you can connect the soundbar and get better sound.

I purchase the 90A and the Samsung 900 sound bar with Black Friday pricing. Everything is amazing when watching movies in a dark room. The sound bar is unbelievable and works great with the Qsymphony! However, when lights are on this is a completely different story. Unfortunately, the new anti-glare panel makes it almost impossible to watch when lights are on. It causes a very bad prism effect across our whole tv screen! We went back to Best Buy where they tested the screen with a flashlight guy and were abalone away by how bad the reflection is enhanced. The 85a does not have this problem. If you always watch tv in dark, or naturally lit area the 90 a is awesome! However, if you watch tv in a lighted area, think twice about the 90A. Especially with low hanging lights like chandeliers or lights above your kitchen island.
Yes, only US
does the 90a have a next gen 3.0 4k tuner?
