The iPad era began in 2010 with the release of the first iPad. It was a real revolution in the market, but at that time no one was sure of the success of the new device. Since the beginning, Apple hasn’t changed the name of the tablet models according to the year they were developed, but get them a generation identifier. In 2020 Apple released the eighth generation iPad and some people that are going to buy a new iPad are interested in understanding the iPad series and generation in order to make the right choice. Note, that each tablet line has several models, which differ in RAM and permanent memory capacity.

Frankly speaking, understanding the Apple iPad is quite easy. First of all, there are 4 series (lines) of iPads: iPad, iPad mini, iPad Pro, and iPad Air. In each of these lines, the tablets are divided into generations and in each of them, there are several models that differ by the memory or 3G/LTE support.

The simple iPad line of tablets was the first line that was launched in 2010. In 2013, Apple began to call all its tablets by special names to make them more attractive to customers and added also iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad Pro. So, in 2012 apple introduced the iPad Air and stopped production of there was the standard iPad models. However, in 2017, after 5 years, Apple decided to resume the production of tablets under the standard iPad name.

However, in 2019 company released an update to this line. Probably, the company was dissatisfied with the sales numbers, because in 2020 the new model of the iPad mini didn’t go on sale.

Even though the tablet market is about 3-5% of all Internet devices, they are still being bought nonetheless, but, of course, much less than phones.
