BD WISE is a technology developed by Samsung that enables various Samsung devices to be automatically configured to work together seamlessly, without the need for additional setup. Initially designed for Blu-ray players and televisions, BD WISE has since been integrated into other devices associated with movie playback, including home theater systems. To operate effectively, BD WISE requires devices to be connected via an HDMI cable.
How Does BD WISE Work?
When you power on a BD WISE-enabled device, all connected components automatically adjust to optimize image display. For BD WISE to function properly, both the TV and video source must be Samsung products that support this technology. Essentially, specialized chips embedded in the HDMI ports detect video parameters and instruct connected devices to adjust their settings according to the transmitted video quality.
The Evolution and Decline of BD WISE
BD WISE technology was introduced in 2008, at a time when televisions lacked the smart features they possess today. Back then, TVs did not have operating systems, necessitating manual adjustment of resolution settings. Failure to set the correct resolution would lead to significant degradation in picture quality.
For instance, if you have a Full HD TV and are watching standard definition (SD) video from a Blu-ray player, setting the TV to Full HD results in a small image displayed on the screen. To view the video in full-screen mode, the TV must be switched to SD mode, allowing it to scale the video appropriately. Conversely, if the TV is set to HD mode while playing a Full HD disc, the image may be too large, causing only part of the picture to be visible.
With advancements in HDMI technology, the adoption of new standards, and the integration of operating systems into televisions, BD WISE has become largely unnecessary. Samsung continued to support this technology for a time to accommodate older devices, but today, it is seldom used.
