LG is a major South Korean corporation operating in various sectors. The company successfully manufactures home appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines. One of its key business areas is television manufacturing, where LG holds a leading market position. Previously, the company attempted to enter the smartphone and tablet markets but failed and ultimately shut down those production lines. Today, LG remains a leading TV manufacturer, although Chinese companies are strong competitors, offering lower prices by using cheaper components. To address this issue, LG is optimizing its production, logistics, and tax costs: components are manufactured at large factories, while the final assembly of televisions takes place closer to consumers, taking regional tax policies into account.

TV Components and Assembly

The main component of a TV is the display. Screen manufacturing plants are located in South Korea and China. LG manufactures its own OLED displays and supplies them to other companies. LG sold its LED display manufacturing plants to the Chinese company TCL, so now all LED displays are purchased from Chinese companies.

TVs are assembled in several countries.

LG has TV assembly plants in South Korea. The Korean plants supply products to Oceania, Australia, New Zealand, North and South America, and other regions, although their share is gradually shrinking as the company seeks to move assembly to other, cheaper regions.

In China, LG manufactures OLED displays and assembles finished TVs, which are shipped to Asia, the U.S. (in small quantities), and Africa.

In Russia, the plant in Ruza produced TVs for Russia, Asia, and the Caucasus, and some of the products were shipped to Eastern Europe. The plant’s operations were halted following the imposition of sanctions.

In Poland, TVs are assembled for European countries. The LED display manufacturing plant was closed in 2019.

In India, TVs are produced mainly for the domestic market, and some are exported to Africa due to high import duties on finished products.

In Mexico, LG has three factories, two of which assemble televisions for the North and South American markets.

In Indonesia, LG operates one of its largest TV manufacturing plants, producing about 3 million TVs per year for Southeast Asia and Australia.

In South Africa, the TV manufacturing plant was destroyed during the 2021 riots.

Quality, regional standards, and the future

LG’s future in the television manufacturing sector is highly uncertain; in recent years, the company has been losing market share in the LED TV segment, which is entirely understandable given that Chinese companies have acquired factories and are ramping up production of their own televisions. LG maintains its leadership in OLED TV production, as it has virtually no competitors in this field.

When it comes to TVs, LG applies uniform quality control standards across all its factories. Premium models, produced in limited batches, may be manufactured at a single factory for the global market, but with some variations, such as different digital tuners depending on regional standards.
