HDMI Quick Switch, also known as InstaPort, is a technology designed to significantly reduce the time it takes for a TV to switch between HDMI inputs. Instead of waiting several seconds for the image to appear, compatible TVs can display the image in about one second after switching between inputs.

Why switching via HDMI takes up to 5 seconds

In the era of analog video, users could freely record TV programs onto devices such as VCRs. Although the recording quality was mediocre, there were no practical ways to prevent copying.

With the advent of digital video, and later Blu-ray players, movie studios and content owners demanded that video equipment manufacturers provide more reliable copy protection. As a result, the HDMI standard incorporated the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) protocol, an encryption system that prevents unauthorized copying of digital video.

Every time an HDMI source—such as a streaming device—is connected to a TV, these two devices must first authenticate each other and establish an encrypted connection. During this process, they exchange encryption keys and establish a secure HDCP connection before any protected video can be displayed on the screen. This is done to prevent the recording of streaming video while it is being transmitted to the TV.

This authentication process usually takes about 5 seconds, and sometimes longer. This is why the TV screen remains black for a few seconds after switching HDMI inputs.

The Introduction of HDMI Quick Switch (InstaPort)

To eliminate this delay, Silicon Image developed the InstaPort technology in 2008. It was later adopted by several TV manufacturers, including Samsung (under the name HDMI Quick Switch). Initially, this technology was available only in premium models, but over time it became the standard. The basic idea behind InstaPort is simple: to ensure pre-authentication of every HDMI connection.

Instead of waiting for you to select an HDMI input, the TV constantly maintains secure HDCP connections with all connected HDMI devices. As a result, when switching inputs, authentication is already complete, and the TV simply needs to activate the selected video stream. As a result, switching happens almost instantly, and the image appears in about one second.

How HDCP Authentication Works

Every HDCP-compatible device contains a unique set of secret encryption keys issued by Digital Content Protection LLC (DCP LLC). These keys are called Device Private Keys (DPKs).

When two HDMI devices are connected, they exchange authentication information. Each device verifies whether the other device is authorized to receive protected content. Protected video is transmitted in encrypted form to the TV and decrypted upon receipt; special chips are installed in the TV for this purpose.

If your TV’s technical specifications mention InstaPort or HDMI Quick Switch, it simply means that the TV can switch between HDMI inputs much faster than a standard TV.
