LG Sound Sync is a feature from LG that allows the TV to connect to and control audio devices (such as headphones, soundbars, or home theater systems) via Bluetooth or an optical cable. It first appeared in LG TVs in 2012. It is an enhanced version of the standard feature for connecting audio devices to an LG TV to output sound; in addition to transmitting audio, it allows you to control the audio device using the TV’s remote control.

How LG Sound Sync Connects and Works

For all features to function properly, both devices must be manufactured by LG. If the devices are from different manufacturers, only standard functionality will be supported. If the devices are fully compatible, the following functions are supported:

  • Volume control and mute commands.
  • Power control commands.

By and large, these are standard features available when connecting an external audio device.

LG Sound Sync via Bluetooth: This is a standard connection process—you enable the setting on the TV, put the audio device into pairing mode, and connect the device.

LG Sound Sync via Optical Cable: When connecting via the optical output, the audio is transmitted through the cable as a digital audio signal. You need to select this setting on the TV and enable signal reception via the optical input on the audio device.

Once connected, you’ll hear sound through the external audio device, and you can control the volume using the TV remote.

  1. No, that’s correct, when you select the optical audio output, the TV speakers are automatically turned off so as not to cause interference. The sound must be controlled on your audio receiver. The TV transmits the sound as is without any processing via the optical output to the audio converter

  2. LG sound sync(optical): Is selected, and I have an optical cable from my tv to an A/D converter. The converter has a headphone output. I get audio from the tv to the headphones just fine but it is at a steady level. The volume control will not adjust the volume level. When I select Internal speaker + LG sound sync(optical) I get sound to the internal speaker but nothing from the optical output. This all points to a problem with the tv. What are your thoughts?
