The first Magic remote was introduced in 2011 under the name Magic Motion. Later, LG shortened the name to Magic Remote. However, in 2025, the company reverted to the original name and began calling its remotes Magic Motion again.

It is important to note that Magic remotes for LG TVs are compatible with TVs from previous model years. For example, a remote released in 2023 will work with a 2021 TV, but the reverse is most likely not true. Remotes from earlier years do not work with newer TVs, and even if they do, they are not fully compatible. For optimal performance, it is recommended to purchase a remote designed for a TV of a specific model year.

Types of LG Remote Controls

LG offers two types of remote controls for its TVs: universal remotes and Magic Remotes.

The Smart Remote, known as the Magic Remote, is designed not only for channel switching but also for navigating the TV interface using voice commands or an on-screen pointer. It provides control similar to a computer mouse. The Magic Remote connects to the TV via Bluetooth.

The standard remote, also called the universal remote, works with all LG TVs. It allows you to change channels and control Smart TV features, but does not support voice control or cursor navigation. It requires no setup and is compatible with LG TVs released since 2010. This remote uses infrared signals to operate.

Price of the LG Magic Remote

Original Magic Remotes are expensive, ranging from $60 to $200 depending on the model. However, LG allows developers to freely use its tools to create third-party remotes (Magic Remote replacements). But here it all depends on the manufacturer’s quality: some remotes look identical to the originals but don’t support voice control; some come with a Bluetooth adapter; and others do not support the full set of commands. Therefore, I recommend buying original remotes or replacing them with high-quality (non-original) ones. What the Magic Remote model number means

Here’s how to decode the model number of the Magic remote, let’s look at the example of AN-MR24GN

  • AN – accessory number
  • MR – Magic Remote
  • 24 – Year (2024)
  • G – modification
  • N – generation or feature
    • A – first generation
    • N – feature NFC support

Regardless of the modification, the remote control will work with the TV of the corresponding year and some other compatible models. Depending on your region, there may be differences in the buttons for quick access to streaming services.

LG Magic remote 2011-2026

In 2025, amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence, LG decided to abandon its fairly successful previous generation remote control in favor of a model with a minimal number of buttons, placing greater emphasis on voice control of the TV. To achieve this, LG’s servers were trained to understand not only direct commands such as “turn on channel 25,” but also similar phrases like “select channel 25” or “watch channel 25.”

The new remote received mixed reviews. Many users noted its cheap build quality, the absence of a mute button, and the lack of backlit buttons. It is worth noting that in the United Kingdom, TVs are shipped with the previous style of remote.

Magic Remotes have changed their shape several times during their existence. There are also premium remotes, such remotes are exclusive, made in a metal case and supplied with LG Signature TVs.

LG Magic Remote Control for TV 2021-2024

In 2021, LG unveiled a radically redesigned Magic Remote, increasing its size and significantly improving its ergonomics and ease of use. The updated design offers a more comfortable grip and an optimal button layout.

One of the key improvements is the addition of dedicated quick-access buttons for popular streaming services, allowing users to switch to entertainment platforms more quickly. LG has also integrated NFC technology into the remote, enabling users to quickly transfer content from a smartphone to the TV simply by holding the phone near the remote. To use this feature, users need to install the LG Smart Home app on their smartphone.

This Magic Remote became the standard remote for LG TVs from 2021 to 2024 worldwide, and in the UK market, it continued to be bundled with compatible LG TVs until 2026.

LG Magic Remote Control for TV 2015-2020

In 2015, a new Magic Remote with a more modern design was released. The release of the new remote became necessary because the television industry had completely moved away from 3D TVs, and quick access to streaming services had become increasingly important. During this period, Magic Remotes retained their basic design; only the button layout and functionality changed.

In 2019, backward compatibility was introduced for the remotes. Prior to this, Bluetooth-enabled Magic Remotes only worked with TVs manufactured in a specific year. Compatibility with older TVs was not always complete, and in some cases, a TV software update was required for the new remote to function properly with older models.

Using infrared signals, the remote could still control virtually any TV, but this was inconvenient, as a message about the remote and TV being incompatible was constantly displayed on the TV screen.

  1. No, you cannot use a 2016 remote with later TVs (incompatibility of bluetooth protocols). Your old remote will work as a normal infrared remote, but Bluetooth will not work, there will be no pointer and no voice support.

  6. Your monitor 24TQ510S supports bluetooth. But LG says you need to check the specification of the wireless module to see if it supports the Smart remote control. Unfortunately, LG doesn’t say how to do this.

    I would suggest checking your TV’s settings to see if the remote can be set up Smart. If it’s set up, that means you can use it.

  10. LG claims that the MR19 and MR20 can be compatible. But this rule does not work in all countries. Your TV must receive the latest update. The remote control must be original. You have to experiment there is no guarantee that the 19-20 year remote will work with your TV.

  14. Hello, when you switch on the Autoset function on your TV, the TV searches for channels with the built-in tuner. Since you do not have an antenna connected to the (in ant) socket of the TV, it does not find anything. The TV has a built-in satellite receiver that can receive open satellite channels, but this requires a satellite dish with receiver heads tuned to the desired satellite. The picture shows the connectors for cable or terrestrial TV, below is the threaded connector for the satellite dish.
    As for using the Magic remote, yes, your TV is ready to use the remote. Since your TV is 2019, you need the Ready remote (AN-MR19BA sold separately).

    If you want to get the most out of your TV, connect it to the Internet. You can watch online streaming services and other TV programs available in your country. Using your TV to watch TV programs via antenna, cable, or satellite is outdated and really only allows you to use 40% of the TV’s capabilities.

I can watch the sky channels, no problem but when I go to settings on the tv to autotone and I follow the instructions, autotune find no satellite or freesat channels.   16. If you watch Sky, you must have a Sky receiver, you need to buy an HDMI to HDMI cable and connect the receiver to the TV. On your TV, select the HDMI input and watch the channels. If you have trouble setting it up yourself, get help from someone who knows about it.

  22. Check if you purchased the original remote control or a replacement. Remote controls sold as replacements often do not support voice control. Also check to see if your TV has received the latest software updates. If you can drop a link from Amazon to the remote you bought, I’ll look into it in more detail.

  36. It depends on the country, MR21 may not work. You will have to experiment. The original AN-MR19 remote control will definitely work for your TV. In LG TVs, if there is bluetooth Magic remote will work. But it is better to check on the LG website for your country whether this remote is supported by your TV.

    Non-original (replacement) remotes from other series may work with your TV with limited functionality. But it is best to buy the original AN-MR18BA remote control
