The LG OLED65WXPUA is a 65-inch 4K OLED television from LG’s SIGNATURE WX series. It was introduced in 2020 and was designed as an ultra-thin premium TV with a different approach to the usual television design.
The main feature of the OLED65WXPUA is that the screen and the main television hardware are separated. The OLED panel is extremely thin, while the connections, speakers and other electronics are located in a separate external unit. This allows the display to be mounted very close to the wall.
The OLED65WXPUA was intended for the North American market. LG also produced the OLED65WXPLA for Europe.
LG OLED65WXPUA design
The OLED65WXPUA is designed around a very thin OLED display. The panel is approximately 3.85 mm thick, which is considerably thinner than a conventional television.
LG achieved this by moving the components normally installed behind the screen into a separate external unit, which LG calls the AV Box. It contains the HDMI and USB connections, network and antenna connections, audio hardware and other electronics required to operate the TV.
The screen connects to this unit with a dedicated cable. As a result, there is very little hardware behind the display itself.
This construction gives the OLED65WXPUA its characteristic Wallpaper-style appearance. When mounted on the wall, the screen sits very close to the surface and looks more like a large picture than a conventional television.
The external unit also contains the speakers. The audio system has a 4.2-channel configuration and a total output of 60 W. Dolby Atmos is supported.
OLED display
The TV uses a 65-inch WRGB OLED panel with a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels.
The native refresh rate is 120 Hz, making the television suitable for displaying 24p movie content and high-frame-rate video. OLED technology allows every pixel to be controlled independently, so the TV can produce very deep blacks without a conventional LED backlight.
The OLED65WXPUA supports Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG. It also includes Dolby Vision IQ, which can adjust Dolby Vision content according to the lighting conditions in the room.
LG also included Filmmaker Mode. This picture mode is intended to display compatible movies with less processing and preserve the characteristics intended by the content creator.
Picture processing
The OLED65WXPUA uses LG’s α9 Gen 3 AI Processor 4K.
The processor handles image processing tasks such as 4K upscaling, noise reduction and image enhancement. These functions are particularly important when watching lower-resolution content because the television must process it before displaying it on the 4K panel.
The TV also supports HDR Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro for HDR content.
Smart TV system
The OLED65WXPUA originally shipped with webOS 5.0.
The system provides access to the LG Content Store, web browser, Home Dashboard and Gallery Mode. The TV also supports LG ThinQ and voice-assistant functions, including Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa where available.
Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit are supported as well.
Because the OLED65WXPUA was released in 2020, its software platform is now considerably older than the webOS versions used on current LG televisions. This is worth considering when buying the model today, particularly if you expect a modern smart-TV experience.
Connections
The main connections are located on the external unit rather than on the thin OLED panel.
The OLED65WXPUA has four HDMI inputs, including support for HDMI 2.1 features. One HDMI connection supports eARC for sending audio from the TV to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver.
Other connections include three USB ports, Ethernet, an optical digital audio output and an antenna input. Wireless connections include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0.
For gaming, the TV supports features such as Auto Low Latency Mode and HGiG. However, it does not list VRR, AMD FreeSync or NVIDIA G-SYNC support.
This is an important difference between the 2020 OLED65WXPUA and many newer OLED TVs, which provide more extensive gaming support.
OLED65WXPUA and OLED65WXPLA
The OLED65WXPUA and OLED65WXPLA are regional versions of the 65-inch LG SIGNATURE WX.
The main difference is the television tuner.

The OLED65WXPUA was designed for North American broadcast standards, while the OLED65WXPLA was intended for European television networks.
This difference is important when purchasing a used TV. A North American OLED65WXPUA may not be suitable for receiving terrestrial or cable television in Europe because its tuner is designed for different broadcast standards.

An OLED panel with 4K resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate makes for a great TV.
If you’re buying a used TV, the condition of the OLED panel is especially important. Check the screen for burn-in, image retention, uneven brightness, and other signs of prolonged use.
