Picture modes on TVs and monitors are preset settings designed to provide the best picture quality for specific viewing conditions or content. There is also always a customizable mode or even several modes in which the user can set their own parameters and save them in the device’s memory.
Basic Modes and Their Features
Standard
The “Standard” mode is ideal for everyday viewing in both bright and dark rooms.
Cinema / Movie
The “Cinema” or “Movie” mode adds warmer tones and soft lighting, creating a more cinematic experience. Brightness is slightly reduced, making it suitable for viewing in darker environments.
Sports
The “Sports” mode slightly increases brightness and contrast while turning off extra image processing, making fast-moving action appear clearer.
Games
The “Games” mode disables all additional processing and increases brightness and contrast, reducing input lag and improving responsiveness.
Bright
Bright mode enhances contrast and color saturation, perfect for well-lit rooms.
Eco / Energy Saving
When Eco or Energy Saving mode is activated, the device’s light sensor adjusts the display brightness automatically based on ambient lighting.
Custom
Custom mode lets you fine-tune every setting to match your personal preferences.
Director / Filmmaker
Director or Filmmaker mode preserves the original vision of the content creators, similar to Sports or Games mode. Although it was heavily promoted as a new feature when introduced, the concept itself is not entirely new.
Night
Night mode dims the screen for dark rooms while maintaining shadow details.
Text / PC
Text and PC modes improve clarity for reading and interface elements.
Graphics / Photo
Graphics and Photo modes focus on accurate color reproduction without excessive brightness.
Animation
Animation mode enhances colors and smooths motion, making cartoons and animated content look vibrant and fluid.
The names of these modes may vary between manufacturers, but the goal is always the same: to make the image as clear and comfortable to view as possible.
