Since Samsung TVs run on the Tizen operating system, any webcam connected to the TV must be compatible with this platform. In fact, the necessary drivers must be installed for the TV to recognize and control the camera, which results in certain limitations and requires consideration of compatibility issues.
Webcams for Samsung TVs (2011–2015)
Between 2011 and 2015, Samsung released several proprietary webcams designed exclusively for its TVs, including models such as the VG-STC5000, VG-STC4000, and VG-STC3000. These cameras were manufactured specifically for Samsung TVs and were not supported on operating systems such as Windows or macOS.
At the time, the primary use for these cameras was making video calls via Skype, as the Skype app came pre-installed on Samsung Smart TVs. However, the situation changed in 2016 when Microsoft, after acquiring Skype, decided not to renew the contract that had allowed the app to continue being used on Samsung TVs. From that point on, the app was no longer available on Samsung TVs. Microsoft subsequently disabled Skype functionality on TVs entirely. With Skype gone, Samsung’s dedicated TV cameras lost their primary purpose and became obsolete. This was because other apps were not compatible with these cameras, and developing separate software for them was impractical.
Webcams for Samsung TVs (2016–2026)
Starting in 2016, Samsung stopped developing dedicated webcams for its TVs. Instead, the company added support for HID (Human Interface Device) devices to the Tizen operating system. This allowed Samsung TVs to work with standard webcams that support HID.
For newer TVs, compatibility between almost any webcam and the TV should theoretically be guaranteed as long as these two conditions are met.
However, compatibility is not guaranteed in all cases. Even if a webcam supports HID, it may not be compatible with some Samsung TVs, particularly older models. This is because TV operating systems are typically updated every five years, so the TV’s software may be outdated. In such cases, connecting the camera usually results in an error message or a message indicating an unsupported device appearing on the TV screen.
It is also important to note that camera support may vary depending on the TV model, even within the same Samsung series. While some models support webcams, others may not.
